The Reina Sofia School of Music, one of the 3 programmes of the Albeniz Foundation, has been created with the support, advice and involvement of great maestros like Yehudi Menuhin, Mstislav Rostropovich, Zubin Mehta and Alicia de Larrocha. Likewise, it also benefited from the support of Federico Sopeña and Enrique Franco, key representatives of the Spanish musical culture of the 20th century.

Beginning with 4 instrument chairs - piano, violin, viola and cello -, the school launched the Voice Chair two years later and progressively opened new chairs in order to create a symphony orchestra. The current curriculum includes voice, piano, violin, viola, cello, double bass, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, flute, horn and trumpet, this last chair being inaugurated in the 2018-2019 academic year.

In 2015, the School integrated the European framework of Bologna and, since then, provides the following study programmes:

  • the Bachelor’s Degree in Music.
  • the Master’s Degree in Music Performance.
  • the Private Degree, in which take part both students who have already graduated from the previous degrees mentioned or from other international institutions and seek to further their training; and younger musicians of exceptional talent who, because they are still attending primary or secondary school, need a tailor-made academic program.

Student selection is exclusively merit-based: in the school's auditions, the only criterion is the musical and artistic talent of the candidates. With an average acceptance rate around 10%, the Reina Sofia School is among the most selective in Europe.

Today, the Reina Sofía School is considered one of the best European schools for specially gifted students who wish to become professional musicians. Every year, 150 young musicians coming from more than 30 countries meet the best teachers -more than 80- in an inspiring building in the centre of Madrid.

All of them are granted scholarships, so that any talented student, despite his financial situation, may enter the School.

The School provides an intense teacher-student relationship and a tailor-made planning of individual and collective classes.

The students enjoy a comprehensive stage experience through the artistic program designed for them, as more than 300 concerts are organized each year, with over 60.000 attendees.
